Celebrating Berlin's Ethnological Museum collaboration with the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies of Freie Universität Berlin, this volume catalogs the museum’s famous Northwest Coast collection. The collection includes 2,500 objects brought to Berlin in the late 19th century by the Norwegian explorer Adrian Jacobsen.
The editors:
Andreas Etges is a senior lecturer in American history at the Amerika-Institut of the University of Munich. Viola König is the director of the Ethnological Museum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Rainer Hatoum is an independent researcher based in Berlin. Tina Brüderlin is head of the ethnological collections at the Naturmuseum und Ethnologische Sammlung, Städtische Museen Freiburg.
The volume as a whole attests to the power and importance of historical collections to communities of origin as well as to contemporary artists and museums. It also shows the great distance both geographically and in methodology between Europe and the Northwest Coast.

Mit "Northwest Coast Representations" ist den Herausgebern jedoch ein wichtiges Werk zu Repräsentation und Museumsethnologie anhand einer der bedeutendsten Nordamerika-Sammlungen der Welt gelungen, das auch für diejenigen interessant sein dürfte, die sich mit ähnlichen Fragen beschäftigen, ohne konkrete Interessen an der Region zu haben. Dies zeigt, dass die Nordamerika-Ethnologie im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs nicht vergessen werden sollte.
