Flussdeltas sind Hotspots globaler Veränderungen von Klima, Wirtschaft und Bevölkerung. Wie gestaltet sich dieser drastische Wandel für die Deltabewohnerinnen und -bewohner? Basierend auf ethnographischen Forschungen in vier Deltas, beschreibt und illustriert dieses Buch aktuelle Deltawelten.
Flussdeltas kennen wir meist aus der Vogelperspektive: als faszinierende Luftbilder von verästelten Flussarmen oder als beunruhigende Landkarten, die vom Klimawandel bedrohte Landschaften zeigen. Dieser Bildband dreht die Perspektive um: Wir begegnen den Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern von Deltas in Brasilien, Kanada, Myanmar und Senegal auf Augenhöhe. Wir erfahren von ihrem täglichen Leben, ihren Sorgen, Hoffnungen und den Herausforderungen, denen sie begegnen, sowie ihrem Erfindungsreichtum. Anhand zahlreicher Bilder und kurzer Texte wird gezeigt, dass das Leben dieser Menschen nicht nur von abstrakten Prozessen wie Klimawandel, Wirtschaftskrisen und Bevölkerungswachstum bestimmt ist. Vielmehr sind diese Prozesse Teil von anderen – und oft wichtigeren – Dynamiken in den Deltas. Basierend auf ihren ethnographischen Forschungen erzählen die Autorin und die Autoren, wie sich koloniale Schatten, unstetes Terrain und flexible Traditionen im Alltag der Menschen widerspiegeln. Das Buch gewährt so Einblick in die verschiedenen – aber oft auch ganz ähnlichen – Formen von Zusammenleben in Flussdeltas.
We know river deltas mostly from a bird's-eye view: as fascinating aerial photos with branching river arms, or as alarming maps showing landscapes threatened by climate change. This illustrated book turns that perspective around. We meet the inhabitants of deltas in Brazil, Canada, Myanmar and Senegal face to face. We get to know their daily lives, their worries, hopes, challenges and inventiveness. Through vivid images and short texts, this book shows that the lives of these people are not only determined by abstract processes such as climate change, economic crises and population growth. Rather, these processes are part of other - and often more important - dynamics in the deltas. Based on the four authors’ ethnographic research, this book provides insights into the diverse, but often similar, forms of community, movement, colonial heritage, volatile terrain and flexible traditions in deltas.

“Delta Worlds” is a well-compiled and entertaining academic coffee table book. It covers the diversity of socio-ecological relations of delta life, builds a strong counter narrative against simplifying crisis narratives, and invites the reader to “shift from abstractions to experiences, from numbers to narratives and from threatened nature to a living world” (27). The book should be of interest for a broad audience that goes beyond academia, practitioners, and policy makers as it allows readers without expert knowledge to dive deep into
delta life.

As the study of these four river deltas shows, real world scenarios are already highly unstable and fluid. Fluctuation has been a way of life in these parts of the world for centuries. We would do well to listen to these delta inhabitants. And this beautifully crafted book, conceptually exciting and aesthetically extremely pleasing, provides just the right means to do so.

The book portrays the life and challenges faced by the people in the deltas not from 'the above' but a perspective that is much closer to the people, a view from 'within' with stories and pictures about their homes, livelihoods, their spirits and myths, and their social and community networks that set the setting for everyday life in the four deltas. This 'alternative' approach from within in contrast to the above provides a different understanding of the deltas and constitutes the key strength of the book. In other words, the authors through story-telling force us to rethink about life in river deltas. True, the people face challenges every day in their lived experience, but they also find creative solutions to resolve with resilience. Therefore, the global story of the delta crisis is secondary to the people. The more important story in the Delta Worlds is how people live, organize, and earn a living in their local and living worlds. This is the centrality of the key argument in the book. Thus, the book with photographs and illustrations has effectively communicated the message to the global community.

Basierend auf ihren ethnografischen Forschungen erzählen die Autorinnen und Autoren des sehr schön gestalteten Bild- und Textbandes auch, wie sich im täglichen Leben der Menschen in diesen Gebieten ihre Kolonialgeschichte, ihre Traditionen und ihre flexiblen Verhaltensweisen widerspiegeln. Ein sehr aufschlussreiches Buch, das Einblick in die verschiedenen Formen des Zusammenlebens in Flussdeltas gibt und gleichzeitig auch aufzeigt, wie diese unterschiedlichen Lebensformen letztlich typologisch doch oft sehr ähnlich sind. Man staunt über die proteische Gestalt und Gestaltungskraft unserer Welt und deren Ausdrucksformen in der sich verändernden Natur. Ein nachdenklich machendes, schön gestaltetes Werk.

Auf mich wirken die Einblicke in die Lebenswelten von Deltabewohner/innen aus Brasilien, Kanada, Myanmar und Senegal eindringlich. Abseits von Karten oder Satellitenbildern, wie uns Deltas meist präsentiert werden. Selbst der Begriff kommt daher, aus der Vogelperspektive sieht ein Delta aus wie der griechische Buchstabe ?. Kaum aber kennen wir sie aus der Sicht jener Menschen, die dort leben. Und so hat auch die Autorenschaft die Perspektive gewechselt und ist fernab von Fallstudien und Statistiken ins Leben und den Alltag jener Menschen eingetaucht, die sich laufend an diese speziellen Lebensbedingungen anpassen müssen. Sie erzählen uns, wie die Deltabewohner/innen neue Märkte für ihre Muscheln finden, vom klimabedingt stagnierenden Reisanbau in den Tourismus wechseln und neue Landrechtsabkommen vereinbaren, die ihnen zumindest etwas mehr Selbstbestimmung gewähren.

While the relatively large print format and thoughtful graphic design of Delta worlds invite cursory leafing and reliving the visual appeal of the exhibit, it adds crucial commentary. As the introduction explains, ‘Deltas are much more than places that reflect our fears of climate change, population explosion, environmental destruction and natural disasters’ (p. 20). To make deltas more relatable, the authors present photographs, maps, and other visual material collected between 2017 and 2019 in five thematic sections. The material illustrates the everyday social life, cultural specificities, and ecological properties of river deltas located in Senegal, Myanmar, Canada, and Brazil. Distancing itself from cartographic representations and other sweeping accounts of deltas, which tend to screen out inhabitants’ viewpoints, the book underlines the importance of research conducted at human scale.
